Saving Fuel in Your Car
Check to make sure your tires are properly inflated to improve your mileage. Under-inflated tires can lower MPG by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Observe the speed limit; gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph. Remove excess weight; avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. Keep your engine tuned to fix any problems before they become serious. A well-maintained car lasts longer, gets better mileage and causes less pollution. If you are waiting for more than 30 seconds, turn the engine off.
